About me
Great that you’re checking out Racingmedia Girls. My name is Lola de Jong, I’m twenty years old, and I’m from the Netherlands. My passion for Formula 1 began not too long ago. No one in my family watches motorsport, so I didn’t grow up with it. In 2021, the Dutch Grand Prix happened to be on TV, and I was instantly hooked. Since then, I haven’t missed a single race.
At that time, I was studying journalism. I was invited by my school to the World Superbike event in Assen, where a few students got a behind-the-scenes look at the World Superbike Championship. We were able to observe on the grid right before the start, witness interviews with riders up close in the media center, and watch the race live. That’s when I realized I wanted to work in motorsports.
A few months later, I attended the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix. There, I saw McLaren's media team filming an Unboxed video. Seeing that ignited my passion—if they can do it, so can I! After the best weekend of my life in Zandvoort, I returned to school, where we started writing my own magazine. Still on a high from Formula 1, I decided to write my magazine about dream jobs in motorsports.
For this, I conducted several exciting interviews with:
- Jan Lammers (former Formula 1 driver)
- Tom Coronel (racing driver)
- Nita Korhonen (director of the FIM)
and a few other notable figures!
Once the magazine was finished, I began looking for my final internship. I found it at Viaplay Netherlands, the Formula 1 broadcaster in the Netherlands. My dream of working in Formula 1 was getting closer! I interned for several months with the social media team and worked alongside Giedo van der Garde and Christian Albers, both former Formula 1 drivers. After completing my internship and earning my diploma, I was offered a contract and finished the 2023 Formula 1 season working for Viaplay.
Following my time at Viaplay, I decided to start my own business, a dream I had been nurturing for a few years. For two years, I wanted to start a blog website with a friend. We came up with the name Racingmedia, but not much else happened. After gaining more experience, I finally launched Racingmedia Girls. During my time at Viaplay, I had close contact with RacingNews365, Motorsport.com, and GPblog. So, I asked myself, how can I stand out from these outlets?
And that’s how I came to Racingmedia Girls, a platform where both men and women are welcome to share their passion, without any discrimination.
Get to know me: my motorsport work experiences
How it started
I didn’t grow up in a Formula 1 or motorsport family. Since I live in the Netherlands, I had heard Max Verstappen’s name mentioned a few times, but the sport never really appealed to me—at least that’s what I thought. Until the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix was broadcast live on Dutch TV. Because the sport was so popular in my country, I thought, you know what? I’ll see why everyone loves it so much.
And sure enough, I instantly fell in love with the sport. The speeds, the competition, and the spectacle surrounding it. Over the course of the week, I did some more research and quickly realized that I wasn’t necessarily a Max Verstappen fan, as McLaren caught my attention more. A week later, I was at work, watching the Italian Grand Prix from the kitchen. And guess who won? McLaren finished 1-2 on the podium, with Daniel Ricciardo in first and Lando Norris in second. That’s when I knew for sure—this is my team, the one I’m going to support.
And that opinion has never really changed. I’m still a loyal fan of Lando Norris and McLaren.
Where my dream came to life
In 2020, I started studying journalism. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to achieve with this program, but I immediately knew I had a passion for social media. It began when I was young, creating fan accounts. Additionally, my passion for radio and TV was also huge.
When I became a Formula 1 fan in 2021, a secret dream started to grow—to one day work in Formula 1 media. In 2022, my school invited me and a few other students to take a behind-the-scenes look at the World Superbike.
We got an incredible behind-the-scenes experience! Just minutes before the start of the race, we were standing on the grid between all the drivers, and we were allowed to sit in the control room to see how the footage from the circuit was directed. We sat in the media center with all the journalists, listening to the drivers being interviewed, and we even got to talk to some journalists about their careers. This is a day I will never forget because it was here that I realized I wanted to work in motorsports. What an atmosphere, what passion, and what a weekend it was!
DUTCH GRAND PRIX 2022
The Dutch Grand Prix 2021 was the very first F1 race I had ever watched, and a year later, I was actually there myself! I had received tickets from my father, for which I’m still incredibly grateful. Your first live F1 Grand Prix is truly special. I had the weekend of my life! For the first time, I saw Formula 1 cars racing past in real life! And that sound! Oh, what an experience to witness it for the first time!
Of course, I also wanted to see the drivers, so I stood by the paddock, hoping to meet someone. While I was waiting, the McLaren media team came by to create some content. That’s when I realized they had my dream job. And then I thought, if they can do it, so can I. That’s when a kind of passion and energy surged within me, and I knew—I want this, and I’m going to do everything, absolutely everything, to make it happen.
I also had the honor of meeting the amazing team Quadrant!
MY OWN MAGAZINE
The day after the Dutch Grand Prix, I had to return to school. I was starting the final year of my journalism program. In the first few months, we had to create our own magazine. Still filled with adrenaline and passion from the Grand Prix the day before, I decided to write my magazine about dream jobs in motorsports.
This turned out to be a great choice, as it brought me closer to my dream. I conducted a lot of research, wrote many articles, and did some truly remarkable interviews!
For example, my feature story was an interview with former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers. We had an incredibly long phone conversation about his career as an F1 driver and how he brought the Dutch Grand Prix back to the Netherlands as the sporting director of the Zandvoort circuit.
I also interviewed Tom Coronel about his long racing career, which is still ongoing. Additionally, I spoke with Nita Korhonen, the director of FIM Women. Beyond interviewing an experienced former F1 driver full of stories, I also spoke to a young karting talent who still has his entire career ahead of him. It was a magazine filled with stories and passion!
Working in F1 for Viaplay
When my magazine was finished, the only thing left for me to do was to complete a six-month internship and take my final exam to graduate with my journalism diploma. I knew I wanted to find an internship related to Formula 1 or motorsports. Since I had met Team Quadrant during the Dutch GP in Zandvoort, they were the first ones I emailed. Unfortunately, I never received a response.
Another company I approached was Viaplay Netherlands, the TV station that broadcasts Formula 1 here in the Netherlands. After a few emails and phone calls, I was finally invited for an interview. It went well, and I was accepted as an intern. I joined the social media team and learned a lot. I had the opportunity to work with former Formula 1 drivers like Giedo van der Garde and Christian Albers, as well as analysts such as Tom Coronel, Red Bull Racing sim driver Rudy van Buren, and many more!
I was allowed to edit interviews with F1 drivers, design backgrounds for the TV studio, film videos with analysts, create fun content for social media, and work with Viaplay's partners. Think of partners like Racingnews365, Motorsport.com, and GPblog.
It was an incredibly exciting experience, where I gained a lot of knowledge. Eventually, after completing my internship, I was offered a contract and finished the 2023 Formula 1 season with Viaplay.
When the season ended and my contract expired, my adventure with Viaplay came to an end, and I started working for myself.
Racingmedia Girls
When I left Viaplay, I immediately missed creating Formula 1 content! I had been immersed in F1 24/7, and suddenly, it was gone. It was also the off-season, so there was no F1 at all. That's when I decided to launch Racingmedia Girls.
Before working at Viaplay, I already had the dream of having my own F1 website. At that time, a friend and I had started working on our own motorsport website, called Racingmedia. However, when I started working at Viaplay, I didn’t have the time to focus on it, so the project was put on hold.
Now that I had time again, I decided to rebrand Racingmedia into Racingmedia Girls. During my time at Viaplay, I had a lot of contact with companies like Racingnews365, Motorsport.com, and other F1 websites. I knew there was already a lot of competition, so I needed to come up with something unique. That’s when the idea came to focus on women, which is how the name Racingmedia Girls was born. Of course, men are also more than welcome in the community. We are a platform where both men and women can share their passion for the sport.
The passion for Racingmedia had been there for a few years, but in 2023, it truly came to life. In January 2024, our Instagram platform went live!
Belgian Grand Prix 2024
So far, the best weekend of my life was still the Dutch Grand Prix 2022. It was clear that I wanted to attend another Grand Prix this year. Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit any GPs in 2023 because I had to work on location in Hilversum every race weekend.
So, this year, it was time to go to the Dutch Grand Prix again. I had actually bought these tickets right after the 2022 weekend. In addition, I also wanted to attend a new GP, one I had never been to before. That’s how I ended up choosing the Belgian Grand Prix—an iconic circuit I had visited in 2023, though not during an F1 weekend.
The Grand Prix weekend in Belgium was amazing! I originally went to the GP alone, but along the way, I met people and had a great time. I also brought my camera and, for the first time, got to photograph F1 cars. It wasn’t easy with how fast they zoom past, but it resulted in some awesome photos.
Want to know more about my weekend in Belgium? Then read my blog, 'The Belgian Grand Prix: Is it worth attending or not?'
I created a ton of content and used my Racingmedia Girls live cam on Instagram for the first time! I provided all my followers with live content from the circuit.
Dutch Grand Prix 2024
The Dutch Grand Prix has, as you can tell, a special meaning for me. This is where I truly decided to turn my hobby into my work.
- 2021: Zandvoort was the first race I ever watched.
- 2022: Zandvoort was the first GP I attended live.
- 2023: Zandvoort was a less exciting experience for me, as many colleagues lived my dream by being allowed in the paddock to work while I was stuck in Hilversum at the office, receiving all the amazing content my colleagues created. These were very long days of around 12 hours.
- 2024: But this year made everything right again when I was back in Zandvoort, unfortunately not in the paddock, but on the circuit! Here, I clearly saw the difference between the Dutch GP and the Belgian GP. If you want to know more, be sure to read my blog: "Pros and Cons of the Dutch GP."
But the best part of all was that I saw my favorite driver win right in front of me. What an experience!
And where I could proudly walk around in my own Formula 1 merchandise, something I truly couldn't have imagined a year ago. Check out Racingmediashop for more info!
Van Amersfoort Racing
In October 2024, I visited the racing team Van Amersfoort Racing, which is active in F3, FRECA, F4, and F2. It was an amazing experience to see a team up close and behind the scenes. A detailed blog about this will be coming soon!
My first F1 paddock experience
This section is not yet available. Unfortunately, I have never been to the Formula 1 paddock. Every motorsport fan dreams of this, and so do I. My biggest dream and goal is to one day take a look at the paddock, see the teams up close, and witness how everything truly works behind the scenes.
