Is the Dutch Grand Prix Worth It? A Complete Guide to Your Decision

Published on 13 November 2024 at 16:10

The Dutch Grand Prix is one that hasn’t been on the calendar for very long. Formula 1 cars have been racing since 1952, but for a long time, this Grand Prix was removed from the calendar. However, in 2021, it made its return, mainly due to the enormous popularity of Dutch driver Max Verstappen, which continues to this day. Are you wondering whether to come to the Netherlands and watch the Grand Prix up close? Then read on to learn about our experience at the circuit!

The Advantages of the Belgian Grand Prix.

Easy Access to the Dutch Grand Prix: Transportation Tips for Zandvoort

The circuit in Zandvoort is perfectly located and very well organized when it comes to transportation. Note that there are no parking spaces, and cars are not welcome in Zandvoort. This might sound complicated, but it really isn't! Public transportation is extremely well arranged! There are special buses traveling across the country that will arrive at the circuit around 9 a.m. You can choose to join such an organized trip, but you’ll need to keep in mind the arrival and departure times, which means you have less freedom.

In addition, public transport is very well arranged. Trains from Amsterdam Central Station to Zandvoort run every five minutes. Because there are so many trains, the crowds were not as bad as we expected! If you're flying in from abroad, it's likely you'll fly via Amsterdam, so you might want to consider staying here as the train connections to Zandvoort are perfect. But there are also other cities further away from Zandvoort where you can stay, as you can easily travel by bus, metro, or train to Zandvoort. From the Zandvoort station, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the circuit, a lovely route along the beach! Everything is clearly signposted.

The Festival Atmosphere of the Dutch Grand Prix: A Unique Fan Experience

The atmosphere during the Dutch Grand Prix is like a festival, almost unlike any other circuit. It’s a completely different vibe compared to what we experienced at the Belgian Grand Prix. What you can expect is that 80% of the people will be walking around in Max Verstappen and Red Bull clothing, but that doesn't make it any less fun.

In the fan zone, there is a massive stage—one of the largest at any circuit. During each Grand Prix, all 20 drivers come to this fan stage, with half appearing on Friday and the other half on Saturday. They often appear in pairs from each team or sometimes in groups of four. You can watch live as the Formula 1 drivers are interviewed. Additionally, this is sometimes an opportunity to get autographs. Drivers often throw team caps into the crowd, making it definitely a place worth checking out! Before and after the drivers' appearances, there are often DJs or other performances to entertain the waiting fans.

But the Dutch Grand Prix wouldn’t be the Dutch Grand Prix without a party. Every evening, big Dutch artists perform, ensuring there’s a party atmosphere! Additionally, as in any fan zone, there are food stalls, merchandise stands, and various activities to enjoy.

In Zandvoort, there are several grandstands, also known as the 'stadium,' and it really feels like a stadium because between the sessions, DJs, guest performances, and shows take place on the track. The Verstappen grandstand is also impossible to miss, as you can hear it from a distance. It’s always a party at the Dutch Grand Prix!

See the drivers!

Some fans may come just for the race, but others also enjoy seeing the drivers up close. If you’re in the second group, I have good news!

In addition to seeing the drivers speak on stage, at the Dutch Grand Prix, you can also watch all the drivers arrive. The drivers actually drive by, and many people wait here to see their favorite driver, or maybe even get an autograph.

The Disadvantages of the Dutch GP

The weather in Zandvoort

The weather in the Netherlands can be unpredictable. In 2024 and 2023, it certainly wasn’t dry. Therefore, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather and also to bring a poncho. Note that umbrellas are not allowed, so don’t bring one. Additionally, the circuit is located right next to the sea, which means there is a lot of wind. This can be troublesome not only for the cars but also for you, as it can cause cold weather. So, make sure to check the weather forecast carefully.

What You Can and Can’t Bring to the Dutch Grand Prix

One very important thing to note is that many items are forbidden to bring with you.

Make sure that when you're going to a Grand Prix, you check the circuit’s website to review the rules. For example, in Belgium, we were allowed to bring many things like food, drinks, and a camera, but this is not allowed in Zandvoort. In Zandvoort, you are also not allowed to bring chairs or umbrellas.

Of course, there is plenty of food and drinks available for purchase, but the prices are definitely not cheap.
